Applebee's is Sooo Back!

BACK WITH A BANG! I'd say.

Newly renovated Applebee's in Tahlia looks bigger, brighter and definitely better from their previous look. Since re-opening four months ago, their restaurant is exuding high spirits and fun times with a wider, open-dining area that's reminiscent of your neighborhood pub (with large screen TVs behind the "bar" and all).

The ladies and I (with a couple of our foodie friends) went to their Tahlia branch to give the new ambience a try and we were glad we did. The family section is cozy (not too dim, not too bright) and we opted to sit in the open area to get a better feel of our surroundings. I'm actually glad that they de-cluttered most of the memorabilia that used to overwhelm the walls. They still have a few around, just enough to still have that Applebee's vibe we all used to know.

We ordered our drinks first and naturally, the girls go after their signature Sangrias (minus the wine in it, of course). What's fun about the open area is that you have a pretty good view of the bar where you can see the bartenders prepare your drinks.

Here's our drinks for the night:

Peach Sangria for Shoegarfreeruby - perfect for the girly-girl, according to our waiter.
Red Apple Sangria for Sundrenched, her favorite. Fresh!
Strawberry Mojito for our fellow foodie friend #1. Minty and sweet. :)
Cherry Lime for our fellow foodie friend #2. It packs a sour, tangy punch.
Now, considering we came in from a long work day, we were hungry for some appetizers! And I think we overdid it. Hahaha! There were plenty to choose from and we helped ourselves to the max. Proof is shown below:

Applebee's Pretzels!
The girls went gaga over these deep fried pretzels. The crispy outer layer hugs the soft bread inside so perfectly and if you dunk it in one of the cheese sauces there, you will be in pretzel heaven. This is a must try and THE bestselling appetizer of Applebee's to date!

Sampler of Chicken Wanton Taco and Buffalo Wings in BBQ Sauce.
This is a customized sampler to our liking. We wanted to try the Chicken Wanton Tacos and found them to be of the Asian flair. The wanton wraps are deep fried in a shape of a taco shell, with a garden slaw and chicken bits mixed with sweet sauce spooned inside. The chopped coriander on top accented the overall taste really well. My only comment on it would be that the wanton wraps were a bit too oily for my preference. Otherwise, I ate everything inside the taco.

The Buffalo Wings were tender and the sauce was just right. I could not have just one piece of it, I had to take two. :) By the way, don't forget to eat those celery sticks! Did you know that celeries have negative calories? Meaning if you eat them, it minuses calories from what you just ate? I kid, I KID! Haha. It was a running joke on our table. But seriously though, celeries are a healthy snack at only 10 calories per stalk. It helps lower your blood pressure and is rich in Vitamin A. So crunch away on those celeries!

Chicken Quesadillas
Now this is one heavy starter. I'd say one order of it is good enough for three people. What I liked most about these quesadillas was the tidbits of bacon strips scattered inside the edges of the tortillas -- why? Because usually when you get to the crust-end of the slice, you feel like there's no more filling there right? But with the bacon tidbits there, it gives you that kick of flavor you need to not leave your last bite of the quesadilla left hanging.

Mozzarella Sticks
Mozzarella sticks are pretty standard: it's a finger-sized lump of mozzarella cheese, rolled, crusted and deep fried. But, what makes Applebee's Mozzarella Sticks stand out is its marinara sauce. I would seriously order this just for that sauce alone. Or course, it's basically a deconstructed pizza, but that sauce, I repeat, is simply delicious.

Spinach and Artichoke Dip
We liked the nachos, we liked the salsa. But for me, the spinach and artichoke were a bit too pronounced in that little bowl and I was looking for it to have more creaminess for some balance. Nevertheless, it's one healthy-tasting appetizer.

Chilli Fries
Another heavy starter and great for sharing. You'll have the gooey cheese and messy chilli on top of every french fry. If you are carbo-loading, this is a must-have. :)

At this point, we wondered if we still had any space left for the main course! We indulged in a little chit-chat first before letting the waiter bring in the next wave. Here goes:

T-Bone Steak, Medium Well for both S and R
According to Sundrenched, even though it looks dry on the photo, it's actually tender and juicy. Shoegarfreeruby ordered the same and said it's one of the few steaks that she likes over all the steaks she's tried in Riyadh. That's four thumbs up!

Seared Rib-Eye with Garlic and Shrimp
This was one of our friend's order and I was able to taste some of it. I love herbs on steak, really, because I think it gives them a different dimension when you bite into them together -- so you can tell by now that I liked this dish. It was also covered in some kind of light soy sauce and sesame seeds - quite Asian in flavors if you ask me. :)

Rib-Eye, Medium Rare
Another friend of ours ordered a different version of the rib-eye steak, this time done medium rare. She's actually a meat aficionado and according to her, they actually got medium rare right - which is a rarity in most steak houses in Riyadh.

Chilli and Lime Rubbed Salmon
This one is my order - I'm a salmon fan. I'd eat salmon all day for the rest of my life if I could. The mushroom sauce is usually poured on top of it but I asked for it to be on the side so I can still get a taste of the grilled salmon alone. It's very tasty with a little kick of the ground chilli here and there. The fish was cooked great - not dry at all!

Applebee's has fares for those who are health-conscious too! How can a steak and shrimp combo be just 55o calories?! Wow! Applebee's Under 550 Calories menu consists of delicious sirloin steak with garlic herb shrimp and zesty chicken dishes. Try it for a tasty lunch or dinner without feeling guilty of ruining your diet. Applebee's has also amped up their sizzling entrees. We should try those sizzling skillet dishes next time. Oh, and also, if you're opting for some steaks, they slashed off a good discount on them. Try their T-Bone for SR 79 only (from SR 99) while they're in their Steak and Ribs Celebration!

As much as we were full to the brim by the end of the main course, the staff would not let us go without having at least one (or two) desserts. We were hesitant, but might as well cap off our tastebuds with something sweet before we go.

Final Round...FIGHT!
Chocolate Lava Cake
Choco Brownie with Ice Cream
Truth be told, these desserts were waaaay too sweet. I think you can already get an idea of that with the pictures of the cake and brownie drowning in chocolate sauce, which I think didn't have to be too generous. To offset the sugar attack I was having, I ordered a cup of tea to accompany every bite instead.

This is the gang at Applebee's! :)
Having said all that, the night was young and hearty and the company of good friends always make a night out of dining complete. I think us Riyadhizens are always looking for a relaxed and comfortable place with great food and ambiance (plus a decent service) and Applebee's is one of those places you should definitely consider. The food is great, the service is attentive and the place is just right for you to unwind and take a break from your usual routine.

The weekend is coming, why don't you go and try out their newly renovated branch for yourself? :) Bring your friends and family.

Happy eating!

xoxo,
Eyecandy

For The Love of Lobsters

Have you noticed? Most of the new restaurants are now sprouting further and further the city center. It works both ways for us consumers: the farther it is, the less crowded and noisy it will be. However, the more difficult it will be to visit. I don't think there will be a problem this Eid season though because with this short vacation, you can nag your husbands to bring you to the restaurants in the "exits".

The new faces of casual dining

Let's visit Exit 8 then shall we? Two powerhouse restaurants recently opened there: The Red Lobster and Longhorn Steakhouse. Because the family and I are kind of weary of steaks already, we decided to try Red Lobster first. We went during its opening week; a mistake considering the live lobsters are not yet available but also an advantage because I can give you the first dibs on the place.

The Red Lobster Facade, family entrance
Singles section

Red Lobster is a successful seafood restaurant chain that started in Florida in 1968. Today, there are more than 600 Red Lobsters in the US and Canada (imagine!). They're passionate in serving great, highest quality seafood considering its roots in Florida. They sea food differently! (Nice pun eh?)

Wood and couches for guests

The restaurant in Exit 8 gets packed quite easily because it's new so prepare for the night crowd. Its design is inspired by Bar Harbor in Maine. The ambiance is casual dining with a somewhat seaside atmosphere which is quite hard to imagine when you're in Saudi Arabia but it works in the interiors.

We started with some awesome freebies:

Savory biscuits

I love their cheddar biscuits! They're warm; also soft and flaky at the same time. The cheesy, herby scent permeates through and tickles the sense of smell. I wished I didn't touch the salad to just eat the biscuits but the folks are glaring at me to eat my veggies. Hehe.

Light and healthy

Their bowls and bowls of salads came with different dressings. I didn't get the names and kinds but they're all tart with hints of sweetness here and there. Even if I don't like veggies much, I can attest that I ate forkfuls of this because the greens are fresh and crisp. I love the combination of the crunchy and creamy ingredients in this pristine bowl.

Lobster Bisque, SR18 (cup) / SR25 (bowl)
Clam Chowder, SR14 (cup) / SR17 (bowl)

The Lobster Bisque Soup is better than the New England Clam Chowder Soup because it's creamier and tastier. Both are warm and savory. Share it to your loved one because it's quite heavy in the stomach. You won't enjoy the rest of the mains if you're full from the soup already.

Seaside Sampler, SR44

The Seaside Sampler is one of my favorites in their menu. The platter consists of lobster-crab-and-seafood-stuff mushrooms (quite a mouthful of a name but this is delicious! Get this separately!), parrot isle jumbo coconut shrimp (crispy and tasty too), and chilled jumbo shrimp cocktail (a popular hors d'oeuvre; theirs is light and succulent).

The parents shared a platter of shrimp dishes:

Seafood Shrimp Trio, SR75
This consists of Walt's Favorite Shrimps, Garlic Shrimp Scampi, and Shrimp Linguini Alfredo. The pasta was a bit bland but the garlic shrimps were flavorful. Walt's favorite is just breaded and fried.

Maine Lobster Tail, SR68

Because the live lobsters weren't available during our visit, the friendly manager suggested we have the Maine Lobster Tail first just to get a grasp of their specialty. Their serving of the 4.5 oz lobster tail in thermidor sauce came with semi-soggy fries (which is fine for me but not for my companions) and a baked potato. The tail looked like a leaf that unfolded. The flesh is delicate and light.

Lobster Tail + Crab Legs + Shrimps

Truth be told, I'm not into lobsters that much. I find the meat tasteless unless you dip it in butter or season it with a sauce. I think they're kind of over-rated. Or I don't know, maybe my tastebuds aren't as sophisticated. Hehehe. So it's not a big deal for me that the live lobsters weren't there yet. However, if there's one seafood I'm known to devour like crazy, it's the good 'ol crab. (Yes, kiber sa masakit na batok! Hehe! Jk.)

Snow Crab Legs , SR75 per pound

They don't have crabs here, the kind we have in the Philippines, but they have the legs of one of the most popular crabs in the world: snow crabs. These crabs, also called queen crabs or spider crabs, are known for their meaty legs. Red Lobster's serve them simply steamed and served with melted butter.

Yummy!

Delicious!!! I love these! I had to let my brother crack the legs for me though. Hahaha!

A complete meal, SR70

My loaded plate

Another dish I love is my order: the Peach BBQ Shrimp and Scallops. The scallops are firm and sweet in itself but with the beef bacon wrapped around it and BBQ sauce smeared all over... I think I went to shellfish heaven. The shrimps were grilled lightly and they retained their succulence. Each piece is worth savoring to the last bite.

NY Strip and Rock Lobster Tail, SR 130

My brother made the mistake of ordering the NY Strip. Seriously dude, who orders steak in a seafood restaurant?! That defeats the purpose of it! Pffft. The ending? He got his wood-grilled 12 oz center cut NY strip alright but it was so tough he spent minutes just hacking slicing through the resistant meat. Even chewing was a chore. So don't order steak in a seafood resto, folks! Go to Longhorn if you're in the mood for steak.

Oh, before I forget... cheers with the thirst quenchers!

That ends my feature on Red Lobster. It put a huge dent in my brother's wallet (it was his treat and I was the one who chose the restaurant, hehehe!) so we won't be back any time soon. But you people should go ahead and try it. Go there for special occasions; when a lobster is all it takes to amp the value of an unforgettable dinner for you, your family, and friends.

If you get the opportunity to try their live lobsters (after it's cooked of course), tell me if they're "juicy and tender, and sweet as scorched honey from ocean depths." ;) ~ Sundrenched

The Chichi of Tao

Whatever happened to our food posts?! We did not stop going out and eating (who does?). We just stopped writing.

I'm gonna pick up the pen for us again. Sorry, are you getting tired of my writing? Apologies. The other tarhas are busy with career changes, events, vacation, and personal issues. That is not to say I'm not busy too. I'm just not too busy, I guess. Haha. Okay, so what will I bring you this time? I've had it with cupcakes but there are still cupcake stores opening in the city. I saw Kitsch in Tahlia and a Cupcake Shop in King Abdullah Road. Yes, it's literally called "Cupcake". Gee, I wonder what they will sell. :) Will have to get back to you on those. I'm not still over with desserts, of course. And if there's one thing that caught my fancy and attention in that department over the last few months, it's the peanut butter ice cream of Tao Lounge.

Okay, let me back track a little. Sampaguita Pride and I went out for dinner days before her vacation in the Philippines and we went to this restaurant called Tao in Tahlia. You might not have seen this but it's there. Just look for a massive sculpture of something that look like an arm, a microphone, trophy, or er, well... a phallic symbol. I swear I did not think of the last one first upon seeing that silvery thing in the middle of a boxy building. I didn't even think that was Tao until I saw this thin neon sign with stars that say "tao" in cursive. Ohkay. How are they related? Mind you, I wore my best abaya, like our dinner in L'Entrecote, for this because the place is 'reservations only.'

I felt like a socialite when I stepped inside. The place screams 'sosyal' and I would have reverted to the conyo-tic English if not for P. This is an English teacher in front of me, what was I thinking?! Hihi. If Riyadh have socialites, then they probably visit Tao Lounge and Restaurant. The place is stylish, chic, elegant, and trendy (thus the "chichi" in the title). There were couches perfect for friends gossiping and hobnobbing and smaller tables for couples on dates. Huge curtains separate the spaces. P and I were led to a small, intimate table for two (we were just on a friendly date, lol). There were soft lights around in shades of purple, pink, blue, yellow. I looked at the menu and gawked at the prices. A maki platter was SR62! Seriously? A pasta with no meat is SR67?! On to the foodography:

Have you seen a green and orange bread? :D
The fab trio of dips for the multi-colored bread (olives, herbed butter, tuna)
California Tao Roll, SR62
This is one of my fave makis ever but still, why so expensive?!
Penne tossed in cream and pesto sauce, SR67
Some green cocktail infused with fruit juices
The SPA: pineapple, kiwi, orange, watermelon
Oreo mousse... we like it. :)
Let me summarize the food experience as this: delicious but expensive. And I honestly think I will only go back to the place if I'm not the one paying for it.

Until the peanut butter ice cream came. It gave the meal a delightful perspective. Let me first say that I am not a fan of imported Peanut Butter. I dislike Goody. I dislike peanut butter that are salty. I'm all for the sweet, oily variety we have in the Philippines. Lily's FTW! So anyway, I was hesitant to order the peanut butter ice cream for the fear of wasting my SR30 for it. But you know what, it's one of the best spent SR30 ever.

The highlight of our meal
This ice cream is sooo peanut buttery! I cannot even explain it nicely so I will explain it without logic. Tao probably took a bottle of peanut butter and placed it inside the freezer. Then they took it out to melt a little, whipped it, and voila! Peanut butter ice cream with the added mmmmm! It is really, really good. It's my favorite kind of peanut butter ice cream and that's saying a lot because they might have used imported salty peanut butter on this one. Yummy!

How chichi!
I got caught in nostalgia with the ice cream I mainly forgot I paid over SR300 for the entire meal for two. (I have no regrets though because I was in good company.)

And Tao's comfort room got me with its honeysuckle paint and mirrors all over. Can you say vanity?!

Mirrors all over. Self-LOVE! Lol.
Made for the Pink Tarha! :P

I will probably be back in Tao for the ice cream. But then again, I'm not a socialite (in other words, I cannot afford this indulgence) so it's safe to wander to other restaurants for now.

The Night We Ate The SR125 Steak

Shoegarfreeruby and I promised we'll treat ourselves when our June payday comes. We had the grand (bonggang-bongga!) plan of eating in a restaurant that originated in Paris where others have to line up for hours. Surely, like us, you'd be dying to eat in Le Relais de L’Enrecote. Say wut?! I have to admit I can't pronounce that. I tried a few times until I had to ask the waiter already. Lol. What I can pronounce, and happily too, is the star of this resto's menu. Actually, the ONLY thing in their menu --- steak-frites. Come again? Steak and fries.

Le Relais de L’Enrecote is known for their steak and fries and that alone. You'd be surprised they're quite famous for it too so dining in here is such an experience we'd be willing to line up for it if needed. Thankfully, all we needed to do is call for a reservation.

The facade is posh and elegant. Blink and you might miss the cursive sign.
R and I spent a few minutes waiting outside the restaurant along Tahlia, just a few steps away from Chili's, because the prayer was still on-going when we arrived (excited kasi!). We thought we had to fight our way in and we were ready just in case people are already blocking our path. Lol. It wasn't necessary because the only table occupied was one. It became two when we took our seats. Good thing we picked the after maghreb prayer schedule because the place is jampacked after 8:00pm.

Branches of L'Entrecote worldwide have the same look and ambiance.

We thought we had to act all formal and sosyal (in fairness, I even wore my best abaya for this!) but the bistro is so simple yet elegant it’s nearly a sin to act pa-sosyal pa. Of course, there's no need to peruse a menu as there's none. We were immediately asked how we wanted our steak done. “Oh medium-well monsieur! Merci!” (Testing lang. :P)

They served us a simple salad first. It was so basic it only had lettuce and pieces of walnuts on it drizzled with their signature dressing.

The starters.
The only thing I can remember about it is that it was too salty. The mustard dressing was a little bit bitter too. I'm not big on green stuff so I munched them lazily. There was bread too but I hardly glanced at it; just took a photo.

Bland bread.

I was excited to begin my steak! Good thing, we didn't have to wait long for it. I wasn't really looking for anything fancy but I was still surprised when they placed an ordinary-looking plate in front of me filled with thin fries and a few cuts of meat. R and I were glancing at each other and asking, "this is it?!"

This is it!

I ignored the fries first and went straight to my steak. I sliced a piece and pierced it with my fork (I think I'm holding my breath while doing this). I put the piece of meat in my mouth... there were no fireworks, I tell you. There was no shout of pure ecstasy (I'm still talking about food). There was no "Eureka!" moment. I only managed to chew and chew, quietly savoring the succulent meat; its mild flavor swirling in my tongue spreading a unique flavor ingrained in my taste buds forever but can't describe with words now.

Perfect combination.
It wasn't anything spectacular... It was amazing in its simplicity. The meat was tender and the sauce was mild and not overpowering. Although I wasn’t really impressed with the sauce. I initially thought it was good of epic proportions because it was a heavily-guarded secret! (O diba?!) Is it because I’m not French and not used to this kind of steak sauce? I dunno. The golden fries, which I ignored for a few minutes, came to focus when I popped a string in my mouth. The crispiness felt wonderful and right. I began eating the meat with a couple of fries and the combo was perfect!

Of course, I was already thinking the fries, even if it resembles a hill on my plate, and the slivers of meat, were not worthy of their SR125 price tag. (I completely forgot about the disappointing salad by now. Did I mention that here?! Really?) Alas, we were not yet finished. There was a second serving of fries and steak. I was already full when I wiped out my first serving but I kept on eating because the steak-frites is really good and not at all cloying!

A menu is only available for the desserts. Because we're delirious and can't quite think for ourselves after the main meal, we asked the waiter to choose for us among their highly-recommended desserts. A tower of meringue and ice cream were put in front of us and it was a wonderful sight.

How sinful is this?! Vacherin, SR38

The Le Vacherin de Relais interweaves different textures from crisp, coarse, smooth, silky, soft in the layers but the taste is just one – sweet. I’m not exactly raving about this dessert.

Of course this meal is best enjoyed with wine the Le Relais de L’Enrecote in France is known for but should we even dare bring this up? Soooo…

Are we recommending you try Le Relaise despite of its hefty price tag and loner dish? Of course! You only live once right? And it's not every day you get to eat the steak-frites the world is lining up for. This can earn you bragging rights too... only if you know how to properly pronounce the name though. :)
