Sweet Somethings

Riyadhizens have a major sweet tooth. Na-ah, don’t contradict me on that because I worked in the healthcare industry, not as a medical professional but still, and I know that most of the topics discussed in Saudi Arabia is about diabetes. Everyone loves sweets and there’s nothing wrong with it as long as consumed in moderation. Right?

I just found out right now that I’m a bit over the normal blood sugar level and I need to start keeping my sugar intake in check. How sad is that? Anyway, that being said, I am now presenting to you some sweet escapes I’ve found in Riyadh… what? I am truly contradicting myself here. Well, what I’m thinking is, if I can’t eat more sweets now, at least I get to share these foodie discoveries with you. You eat for me. ;)

The Cake House

My go-to bakeshop for impromptu cakes
In my six years in the Kingdom, I have developed an instinct to look and feel differently towards the cakes served to me. I find most cakes here, especially the commercial ones, too sweet and too syrupy. They lack the fluffiness of a Goldilocks cake or the creaminess of a Red Ribbon chocolate icing. I miss those in the Philippines… until I discovered the next best thing in Riyadh: The Cake House.

Yummy cakes!
Not at all cloying
The cakes in Cake House are named and flavored after the most popular chocolates here in Saudi Arabia: Mars, Galaxy, Candy, etc. And they also have a non-chocolate variety that I love: Honey. Their icing is not too sweet (almost unsweetened, claimed my brother who’s starting to share a free space in this blog everytime I have a food/resto entry) and their cake is soft and fluffy. Another great thing about the cakes in this shop is the very affordable price. SR59 and above is not at all bad. I will eat this cake every week if it doesn’t make me a diabetic. They also make customized cakes for every occasion. You should check out their wedding cakes that have traditional white icing piping and ribbons all around. So nostalgic!

Piece of Cake

The Piece of Cake store is cuuute!
While waiting for the prayer time to finish so we can eat in the Backyard Grill, my friend and I decided to check out what’s beyond the corner of the street (just because we’re always curious and on the move like that). That’s when we discovered a dainty store named Piece of Cake. And guess what they offer? Haha!

Pick your theme and character.
Don't wear the gown; eat it! :P
Mini cupcakes in varius flavors
Piece of Cake is a bakeshop that specializes in customized fondant cakes. Whatever your theme is, they can do it. If they can do this huge bridal gown cake (priced at a whopping SR 7,000 btw), I doubt they cannot do anything you request them! Their take on character cakes are awesome! We tried their cupcakes and I wasn’t wowed but for a cupcake, it’s fine.

Do not blame me if your sugar levels go up than the normal okay? I am merely suggesting. Hahaha! Have a sweet week, Riyadhizens! Keep the happiness flowing! ~ Sundrenched

Uber On, Riyadhizens!

I was just reading about Uber Black in Manila when I chanced upon a tweet saying that Uber has arrived in Riyadh. I was intrigued.

Uber is a mobile app that allows you to reserve a private driver that drives a sleek, executive-style car. Let's make something straight though: Uber is the technology that connects people to licensed drivers through registered partners. It's not the car company. The company that provides their luxe cars are based in Riyadh and is their partner in bringing this service to the Kingdom's capital. Founded in 2009, Uber is now serving 70 cities and is rapidly expanding its global presence. To me, it’s the answer to our transportation woes in Riyadh, especially for us women.

As I’ve said in my reviews of two taxi apps now operating in Riyadh, this city is a unique market when it comes to transportation. Women can’t drive and we can’t depend on regular taxi cabs either. So we are always waiting for our fathers or husbands to drive us around town and you know how tricky that is. We have to appeal to them and pray that they are in a good mood to drive us. So finally having enough transportation options is great!

The Pink Tarha ladies mainly use the limo service of our workplace. (I have long graduated from depending on my dad to drive me; that only worked three years ago when I was fairly “new.” Now he says I’m seasoned and I can navigate my way already. Haha!) We already know our drivers and we can trust them. However, being a service of a huge workplace, our trusted drivers are also the go-to drivers of others. Most often than not, they’re no longer available when we call them because they have a customer or they’re too far away and stuck in traffic. Thus the need for options, options, options!

Ladies and gentlemen, Uber has arrived.
Uber Riyadh’s arrival in the city is timely. Who doesn’t want to have his/her own “private driver” driving a fancy car? But this time, you have everyone’s private driver! It suits the passenger with a good taste. So here’s how the app works:
1. Download the Uber app on your mobile phone.
2. Sign up with your name, mobile number, email address, language you wish to use, and billing information. Yes, you need to have a valid credit card to use Uber. This is the only mode of payment they have now.
3. Read the terms and conditions and click Sign Up!

I tried the Uber service one day to go home. I wish I had a fancy event to go to but during that time, there wasn’t and I couldn’t wait to use the Uber app so I can share the experience with you already so I said to myself, “Well, I would just have to go home in style then!”

The Uber is app is nice and very professional-looking. The app immediately pointed out my location (which is a street away btw). I clicked on the car button and it immediately requested a car for me. Then it confirmed that a driver is already en route.

Finding and found!
Look at that cute black car button! So cute and appropriate. I can see it moving in the map so I know exactly where the driver, whose name, details, and picture appear in the page, is. It also tells me how many minutes the driver will arrive in my location. Because Uber Riyadh is just in its soft launch, it only has 10 cars as of the moment. They will eventually roll in more when they launch formally soon.

The Uber has a very cute car icon... and a cool option to share fare!
One of the features of the Uber app is the “Split Fare” which you can opt for if you’re going out with a friend and you’re picking him/her up in his/her place. I haven’t tried that feature so I’ll update next time.

The driver was a few minutes late but maybe that’s because of the wrong location that the GPS provided. (You can drag the pin to your correct location, which I didn't do because I was such a noob, haha!) I called the driver and he was friendly enough to accommodate my directions. It didn’t arrive in a GMC Yukon too. But it did arrive in a GMC Denali which is great! The car was clean and nice. And off to the house I go.

This is my taxi?!? O.O
Because this is my first ride, I was able to use a coupon (UberRiyadh) for a SR100 worth of ride so I got this trip for free. It made me wish I went to somewhere father away. Haha! I received my receipt via email. It cost me SR 27. Pretty much affordable if I compare it to the SR 20 I pay on a regular taxi (which I only use when push comes to shove) and the SR 25 I pay on my trusted limo service. What’s SR 2 if it guarantees a safe and comfortable ride? Also, they'll be ushering in add-on services that will make your ride feel really luxe (fancy dates and water anyone?).

Driving in style!
The base fare is currently at SR 9 and an additional SR 0.75 per minute and/or SR 1.75 per kilometer. No idea if this was in effect already when I tried Uber because it said in their blog that a promotional rate is currently going on (15% off standard price). There is a fee of SR 20 if you cancel your car request after 5 minutes.

Now here’s some good news for you, Riyadhizens! The Pink Tarha has been given a special promo code that will entitle you to a SR80 discount on each of your first two rides using Uber! Just download Uber in your iOS or Android phone, sign up, and go to promotions. Enter ThePinkTarha and your first two rides in Uber will be free (provided you don’t go over the SR 80 limit of course!). This promo code applies to new users only so SIGN UP NOW! Easy eh?

Holy (Big) Smoke (Burger)!

Whoops, sorry folks! Where have I been during the past week? I have been very busy with errands but don’t you worry, I do not forget about The Pink Tarha blog. Sometimes I just need a break so I can come up with more words to use in my entries. I can’t help but feel repetitive. Speaking of repetition, here’s another proof that the burger trend in Riyadh is on a repeat button and is not slowing down… the Big Smoke Burger.

Welcome to your burger dreamland.
Big Smoke Burger is a Toronto-based gourmet burger chain. I have no idea why I initially thought it originated from Jeddah. The branches here in Saudi Arabia are franchised from Canada. Finally, the poutine in their menu makes total sense. What’s a poutine you ask? Well, it’s this:

One of Canada's most common food
Hand-cut fries with cheese curds and gravy. I’m a bit ignorant of poutine but in Jollibee, I usually dip my fries on their gravy (or the ice cream, depends on my mood) so I’m not so sure what’s special with this. Poutine originated in Quebec, Canada. Someone thought of putting cheese curds on their fries and the sauce was later added to keep the fries warm longer.

Big Smoke Burger’s poutine is a bit lackluster. I mean, for a Canadian brand, they should do well on this side dish because it’s so common in their country. But the poutine we tried here is bland and didn’t create a good impression on me and my brother (who you all know by now is very picky with his food; he’s a harsh critic I tell you, haha!). I’d rather eat the fries on its own, thank you.

On our table
I was really excited to try the burger because one of our readers emailed us to tell us that we gotta try Big Smoke Burger because it was newly-opened (maybe 3 months ago) and the line is long. It must be THAT GOOD right?! Big Smoke Burger is known for its handcrafted burger that has a unique smoky, homemade flavor.

When we went, there was no line but there were a good number of customers taking bites of their orders already. I excitedly chose the Blue Burger; ordering at the counter and eagerly waiting for it in one of their tables. Apart from the ‘always fresh, never frozen’ burger patty made of Ontario AAA beef, my chosen burger has gorgonzola (what is known as the blue cheese ergo “blue burger”, not because it’s colored blue haha), avocado, rosemary garlic mayo, tomato, and lettuce.

This burger ain't blue
The burger section (I had the tomato removed on my burger).
My heart stopped a bit when I bit into the burger because I was expecting a lot. I am no burger connoisseur but I can say that this burger packs a lot of goodness. The patty is juicy and lean. It’s thick and perfectly-cooked. However, the salty cheese was masking the flavor of the beef and all I was getting is this salty bite from the buttery blue-veined cheese. I was scraping the cheese of my burger much to the chagrin of my brother who ordered the Big Smoke Burger (because according to him, you have to zone on the item in the menu named after the restaurant because it means it’s the best right?).

Whoah burger!!!
The Big Smoke Burger has caramelized onions, smoked cheddar, tomato, lettuce and horseradish mayo. With his choice, the smokiness of the beef is more pronounced. If it were me, I would have enjoyed it but for him, the burger was overpriced with nothing spectacular or unique that would set it apart from others. Believe me, he tried a lot of burgers in Riyadh already and I am not about to challenge him with his comments.

The Big Smoke Burger
I agree to his comments to an extent. With the burgeoning burger field in Riyadh, it’s difficult to stand out. Without the WOW factor, patrons would have a hard time to return to a burger shop especially if there are a lot of burger shops to try out there. However, I enjoyed Big Smoke’s burger patty. They can really take pride in high quality ingredients they use in creating theirs. And I heard the onion rings are good too and that you’d be crazy if you don’t try the Crazy Burger and Lamb Burger.

Order from the counter and wait.
The Big Smoke Burger spot in Tahlia Street is a bit hidden in the construction that is going on in Riyadh’s busiest street. Good thing, its sign and colors of yellow and black are so vivid you’ll easily see it. If not, it’s just across the Al Hilal boutique and beside Criollo. The staff are friendly and the ambiance is quite open and airy with high ceilings. It can get packed at times. ~ Sundrenched

Iconic Riyadh Marriott Hotel Relaunches

The Pink Tarha was invited last week to the Australian Food Festival at the Marriott Hotel. Apart from the very good food, we were mesmerized with the newly-renovated hotel’s lobby. Sampaguita Pride couldn’t help but reminisce about the hotel, having seen it in its heyday as a kid and how historic it looked like before she left for the Philippines last year. Even I was really impressed by the Marriott’s renovation. From being ‘a blast from past’, Marriott has now earned its place in the present; both as an icon of the glorious days and a beacon of change.

The Riyadh Marriott Hotel from afar

Mr. Muin Serhan, General Manager, Riyadh Marriott Hotel; Dr. Badr Al-Badr, CEO Saudi Hotels & Resorts Company; Mr. Abdullah Al-Issa, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Saudi Hotels & Resorts Company; Mr. Alex Kyriakidis, President and Managing Director, Marriott International Middle East and Africa; and Mr Ibrahim Barghout, Area Vice President Middle East and Africa, Marriott International
Last March 10, Marriott International celebrated the re-launch of the Riyadh Marriott Hotel, their first property in the Middle East and Africa. Opened in 1980 (yes 1980!!! I wasn’t even born yet!), the Riyadh Marriott Hotel is an iconic landmark in Riyadh. “The Riyadh Marriott Hotel is a beacon It showcases our authenticity as a company: our roots and the strength of our partnership with Saudi Hotels and Resorts Company, the owners of the property for more than 30 years. With the refurbishment, the hotel also symbolizes and showcases our vision, as we continue to innovate and lead the future of travel,” said Mr. Alex Kyriakidis, president and managing director of Marriott International Middle East and Africa.

Marriott International and Saudi Hotels and Resorts Company held a media conference last night in Riyadh to re-launch the hotel following a multi-million refurbishment.
The refurbished five-star property now features Marriot Hotels’ signature new innovations - the ‘Great Room’ - which is being rolled out across all hotels in the region. Mr. Muin Serhan, general manager of the Riyadh Marriott Hotel said, “The Great Room is stunning with its Arabian oasis atmosphere. Our guests can socialize, unwind, work, or dine in this up-scale space where then can enjoy the ambiance created by the spectacular light installations, Mashrabiya wooden screens, glass mosaics, water feature, and plush seating.” This is taking a “hotel room” to the next level!

The grand lobby
Other features and amenities at the Riyadh Marriott Hotel include 418 newly-renovated rooms with modern furnishings, newly-designed contemporary executive lounge for dining, relaxing, and working, a ladies-only gym (yes!!!), and stunning new Royal Suite and exclusive crew lounge. They also have pumped up dining venues: Terrace Grill, a fine-dining steakhouse that won the MENA Travel Award and the only restaurant in Riyadh specializing in Angus beef and the Atrium Cafe for relaxed meals and drinks throughout the day.

With this improvements in the Marriott, I can smell “staycation” in the air! It would not only be perfect for visitors and tourists in the Kingdom. It would also be the perfect venue to spend some quality time with family and friends in Riyadh. All that hard work in the city needs some relaxation and pampering time too. Riyadh Marriott Hotel with its iconic stance and amazing evolution might just be our next destination! ~ Sundrenched

Easy and Smart Taxi Apps in Riyadh

Last week, Arab News told its readers "Share your experience of using taxis in your city. I was giggling at some of the comments. There should be a forum made to tackle the taxi problems in Saudi Arabia. Some of the comments like drivers being gay and smelly are quite funny but the public transportation issue in the Kingdom is serious. Safety, hygiene, and costs... these should be put in the agenda asap!

Most women are afraid to use regular taxis in Riyadh. By regular taxi I mean this kind:

Photo via Arab News
The Pink Tarha's own fear in using them has spawned different how-to guides which you can read here, here, and here. We can list all the complaints that we can think of and it will probably fill half of this page. So we will not do that. Instead, we will look for a solution. Not fail-proof but at least better than what was used to.

When I was in the Philippines for vacation, I came across a mobile app called Grab Taxi. It's an app that lets me find a taxi near my place to take me somewhere else. Some of the time, I had good luck in locating one that arrives promptly. Most of the time, no taxi is available. I blame that for our location that loves traffic so much. So there I was wondering when an app like that would arrive in Riyadh. I find it handy. I mean, I'm not sure I will be fully trusting in using a taxi app like this in Riyadh but it's worth a try yeah?

Imagine my surprise when I found out that hey... there are taxi apps in Riyadh already! I'm probably the one who's late in discovering them. I needed taxi most of the time especially with a project I took on recently so these apps are timely. Don't get me wrong though; I only use them when my trusted, known limo drivers (the service used by most hospitals) are not available and I'm in a hurry. You know how heavy traffic is in Riyadh nowadays? It makes it harder for our trusted drivers to come get us at the appointed time so a faster alternative must always be at hand. So here goes...

First, YOU NEED AN INTERNET CONNECTION TO USE THESE APPS. Just saying. :P Also, these taxi apps uses regular taxis. So if you're allergic to using regular taxis, well, you might want to skip this entry because it's quite long and it's not my fault if you won't still be convinced to give them a try after reading. Haha.

The first app that I downloaded and used is called Easy Taxi. It was founded in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on April 2012 and became the pioneer online taxi service in Latin America. It expanded its services and has now arrived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This smartphone application that connects taxi drivers and passengers claims to be the largest taxi booking app in the world.

Your Taxi in One Click (the once click is not true)
The app itself looks very professional featuring an orange and black theme that uses sleek lines and fonts. It locates you through a GPS and shows you where you are on the map through a pin. Requesting a taxi can be done by pushing the green button that says "Request Taxi."

STEP 1: Request taxi | STEP 2: Verify pick up point, provide landmark, select payment method, and continue...
It then goes to a page where it shows the name of your location. You can insert a landmark if you want to be more specific. You can also save the location as a favorite if it's your house or office since you're frequently there. You can also choose the method of payment like cash, credit card, or debit card. Press "Continue."

STEP 3: Finding Taxi | STEP 4: Taxi is assigned. You wait. (Details above for display only.)
It will then scan the area for taxis registered with Easy Taxi. What it does is send a message to all nearby taxis that there's a request. The first one to respond would be given the slot. After a taxi has responded, the app will show the taxi driver's details like name, phone number, and plate number. They even have the driver's photo sometimes. It shows you how many minutes will the driver arrive. You can also cancel the request any time (of course as long as the driver doesn't reach you yet!).

My first time to use this app was a success. My friend and I were waiting at the Alkhozama Hotel and it was already past 11 o'clock. Our trusted limo drivers have all gone home and we were left with no one to fetch us. I decided to use the Easy Taxi app. It sent us the details of the taxi driver and the taxi itself. So we waited... The main problem that I encountered with this app is its inability to give a good estimate on how many minutes the driver will arrive. It was just set to 1 minute. Hello?! The driver took around 20 minutes to get to us. However, we actually like the driver because he was nice and his car was clean. He's even in our roster of trusted taxi drivers now, especially during our late night outs (sorry, we like having coffee and chika too much, haha!). There was no surcharge.

The second time I used the app, that's when I had problems. I was at the Alakaria 3 building when I requested for a taxi. The app got me one and I waited. I decided I had to call the driver just in case. Good thing I did because the taxi driver informed me that he has passengers! Uhmn, so why take my request?! So I canceled the ride and requested for another one again. This time, upon giving me the details of the driver who responded, I immediately called him only to be told that he's stuck in traffic and that he's a bit far from where I am so he couldn't come to me. Again, why take my request if that's the case?! I guess the drivers need to be more educated about how the app works.

PROS
Handy; can be used anytime, anywhere
Complete information of the driver and car (with photo!)
No additional fees in using the app
Sleek, professional-looking app
Available for download on iOS, Google Play, Samsung, Windows, and Web
Stores usage history (so we can call back the driver again if he's good)
More cars than Smart Taxi

CONS
Location in the map is not precise (the sample above shows me several buildings away from where that locator is pointing)
Time of arrival is not precise (even far from the given estimate)
Drivers lack the knowledge in using the app
No visible sign that it is an Easy Taxi (I made the mistake of entering one taxi that stopped; it just so happens that they had an almost identical plate number!)

Smart Taxi is the second taxi booking app that I have on my phone. It was created by the AiiA group in Lebanon. It aims to serve the Middle East and is now operating in Beirut and Riyadh. This application allows users to get accredited licensed cabs in just two clicks.

'The smart way to get a taxi'
I used it one morning to go to work because again, my trusted drivers are busy and I was already running late. The app itself is not that pleasing to the eyes because it has too many information (including a pixelated logo!) and colours up front. The map is more detailed though. It shows the street name in English and Arabic. It also shows the number of taxis are within your area. You will be required to sign up before your first use.

STEP 1: Press taxi. | STEP 2: App finds a taxi.
When you press "Taxi" it goes directly to work by scanning and looking for an available taxi. It has a "find taxi in your area" and shows that it's already obtaining the details of the taxi it's going to send you. In this app, it only shows the taxi code and the kind of taxi. What's nifty about this app is that it shows you where exactly the taxi is, even providing the route the taxi will use to get to you. It also shows how many minutes before it arrives and tell you to prepare if it's just one minute away.

STEP 3: Taxi gets assigned, you follow on the map, and wait.
On the first time I used this app, it got me a taxi immediately and showed me where it was. It also followed a route highlighted in yellow. Every time the taxi moves, it shows a tiny blue dot and shortens the line. So I got to see where precisely the taxi was! Even when it's stuck on the traffic light, I knew because it's not moving on my screen. When it got near my place, I received a notification to prepare. The taxi appeared promptly in front of our building at the same time it says so on the map. Coolio. However, the taxi driver must have forgotten to signal his device that I'm already on the taxi that it didn't record this trip and my arrow on the app kept on moving away from the designated pick-up point. Haha! The taxi driver was quiet and his car was clean.

I tried the app again and it worked like the first time. I was picked up by the driver in the pick up location on the minutes that was shown in the app. The driver was a bit friendlier this time and he let me see the device they use for the Smart Taxi. He wasn't sure he understood everything about it though so he showed me a Smart Taxi brochure the company provided them. The third time I used the app, I was surprised to see the same driver picking me up (it did say on the app that it's the same driver based on the code). I'm just curious at the coincidence. Anyway, he seems an okay driver but I have a policy in riding regular taxis to not use the same twice. (That's just me.)

PROS
Handy, easy-to-use (in just two clicks!)
No additional fees in using the app
Precise real-time progress of taxi on the map
Uses accredited, licensed taxi drivers (as stated)
Stores usage history

CONS
Not sleek-looking app
Only works in iOS and Android
Doesn't show in photo how many taxis are in your area
Incomplete details of driver and taxi on the app itself
No visible sign that it's a Smart Taxi
Fewer taxis available compared to Easy Taxi

Between the two, I use Smart Taxi more often because it's more hassle-free and it shows the precise location and time of arrival of the taxi so I'm more in control of the situation (control freak!) but I appreciate the more detailed information that Easy Taxi provides when it comes to the driver and car. Here are the most obvious differences:

Showing the number of taxis around you.
When finding taxis, you get an immediate result on both. Easy taxi gives a graphic number of the taxis near your location while Smart Taxi gives a number (10 taxis out of their 548 taxis are near on the example above). Smart Taxi however doesn't show where those taxis are on the map.

Taxi driver and car details
Easy Taxi gives more information about the driver including the name, phone number, type of car, and the license plate. It even shows a picture if available. On the other hand, Smart Taxi just gives a taxi code and the type of car. Although they provide these details, I still want to see a very visible sticker of both apps on the taxis they're using so we can identify them easily.

The taxi apps in the city are geared more for the ladies because guys can just hail one from the street. I mean, they're strong enough to fend off advances and harassment just in case right? The advantage of using these apps is we get to know the drivers who are driving for us. Unlike before when we only have the license plate (sometimes we can't even see and memorize that immediately) and some random numbers inside the car we don't even know if they're real or working. When you use the app, you can just take a screenshot of the driver's info page and send it to your family or friends to inform them of your whereabouts. I can't say I'm 100% trusting the drivers or their cars but it's good to know I have a more secure way of riding a regular taxi cab when push comes to shove. And yes, you can haggle the fare before you step inside the cab or ask the driver to use the meter.

Here are some tips in using the taxi apps:
- Request a cab 10 minutes (or more) before your intentional departure time to give the driver enough time to travel from where he is to your location.
- If you see in the map that the driver tasked to pick you up is still a bit far from your location, cancel immediately and try another app.
- It's rude to cancel the taxi when he's already in your pick-up point so cancel way ahead when you realise you need to.
- If you don't like the driver that was tasked to pick you up for random reasons, say you changed your mind and pay him for his trouble in getting to your place. Or you can get in and have him drop you off a few blocks after. Hail another cab. (Always weight the situation and go with your gut feel).
- Haggle fare. Just because you use an app doesn't mean you can't ask for a fixed fare before boarding the taxi. We all know fares here in Saudi Arabia are unfair (hello, have they seen how much gasoline costs here? These taxi operators!).
- Take a screen shot of your driver's and car's information and send to friends especially if your destination is far.
- Don't get too friendly with your driver; some might take that on a different light. Be polite in answering questions (or just say Mafi mallum Arabi and he will get off your back.) Some drivers are genuinely friendly too so it depends on the situation and your mood for the day.
- Know where you're going! Refer to our tips here
- Travel with friends as much as possible. Avoid going solo.

So there you go. I hope my review and experiences helped. I'm sure I forgot a lot of details still so just comment here or message me in The Pink Tarha's Facebook page for faster replies.

There's another new taxi app called Uber Taxi but that's a different story. They don't use regular cabs for their service. And there's Careem too where you book a taxi in advance. I'll talk more about ithem next time. Stay safe on the roads everyone! Stay vigilant. ~ Sundrenched

Ladies, Let's Keep The R Lounge A Secret

Me: Let’s go to Kingdom Mall!
Father: Have you realized that in the years, MANY years, that I’ve been in Saudi Arabia… I have only been there 3 times?
Me: Really? That’s why we’re going. So you can count more times of visiting.
Father: And you? In the 6 years you’ve been here, you’ve visited it for many times?
Me: Uhhhhhh…
Father: And I haven’t been to the Skybridge. 25 years in Saudi Arabia and I haven't been there.
Me: Really? Then let’s go.
Father: And what about the Ladies Floor? What's in there?
Me: And what about the Ladies Floor indeed…
So we occasionally have our sumbatan moments… especially with my lakwatsas. Hehehe. Nothing life-threatening though. Just being a normal family here. :P

In the numerous visits to Kingdom Center, I haven’t really explored the Ladies Floor. Have you? I just don’t get the point of going there if my favorite brands are located below it. And most of the boutiques have stratospheric prices I obviously cannot afford. *bitter!* As for the freedom to remove my abaya… well, it's fine. There are ladies who enjoy shopping without their abayas but I'm already in love with my abaya I'm too lazy to remove mine and put it back again after a few minutes. Besides, honestly, I only have my pajamas on when shopping. Hahaha! I have nothing against those who enjoy the Ladies Floor though. I mean, Debenhams Ladies Section. ‘Nuff said. ;)

It’s no wonder why it’s the first time I tried R Lounge. I think R was supposed to be “retro.” My friend J and I were famished after attending insightful sessions from the Global Competitive Forum in the Four Seasons Hotel right next door the mall so we looked for something “new.” (The GCF was held last January so yes, I wrote this entry late again.) We decided to try the restaurant in the Ladies Floor after consulting Foursquare

A cafe too!
Many ladies seemed to enjoy R Lounge for quick bites. Someone swore the tuna sandwich is heaven-sent. Whoah! But first, this Lucky Accident caused us to stare for a minute. What a paradoxical name for an appetizer. Accidents aren’t supposed to be lucky. Unless when you survive one, then you are blessed.

Asian flare!
Anyway, I guess this starter was a product of a sudden mix of veggies and chicken. I say, we Filipinos have this accident happen to us a long time ago in the form of… lumpia. They just made into bags and added cilantro. Coolio.

That's healthy-looking!
The combination is good and flavorful. The bags retain their crunch; it’s just a conundrum how to eat this the proper way without spilling its contents all over you.

Good for your shopping break.
It’s easy to determine what’s inside the tuna sandwich just by looking at it. So we’re curious what made it heaven-sent. I mean, it was delicious but it wasn’t extra-ordinary so don’t expect.

Aha! I see you ingredients!
It was good because the bread is soft and the corn kernels provided a slight crunch and sweetness from the mix of light tuna and mayo. I did enjoy eating it but I only reached the clouds. Not heaven. Haha!

Looks yum!
The most intriguing would have to be the orange-infused shrimp pasta. I’m sure there’s a more elaborate recipe somewhere but this pasta is creamy with a twist of tang. Okay, so no fireworks when I tasted it but it was a fine, delicate, smooth cream-based pasta. If you want to veer away from the usual carbonara, then go for this.

A fresh twist.
A good time to visit R Lounge would probably in the morning and in the afternoon. You can still enjoy the punch-colored seats and the steady buzz of the Kingdom’s Ladies Floor. Come night time, it gets packed. The prices are a bit on the expensive side considering the food but you can always share.

I wouldn't bring these food to my father though because he would complain it's too fancy schmanzy (all the more reason he won't go to Kingdom Center now, haha!). I will however drag him to the Skybridge. He's a Riyadhizen and he hasn't been to the Skybridge? Inexcusable! :P Oh well...

Shopping and dining? That fierce combo is always a pleasure to do in Kingdom Tower. ;) ~ Sundrenched

Livin' La Vida Lanka: Nuwara Eliya and Colombo 3/3

Hooray, I didn't wait after 10 years before publishing this entry! Haha! I am writing and publishing this now so I won't forget and I can move on from our 2013 out-of-the-country trips. I have so many other travels within the Philippines that I want to share to you and our foreigner friends so The Pink Tarha can do its part in the It's More Fun in the Philippines campaign launched in Riyadh last December

Okay, so where was I? Oh yeah... after the "I thought I'm gonna die!" episode in Sigiriya and the National Geographic-like action (feeling lang naman, hehe) in Minneriya, my friend and I were ready to slow down and relax on our next destination (after all, this is supposed to be a recharging vacation not death-defying tsk! haha), the alluring Nuwara Eliya in Sri Lanka's central district. This hilly place dubbed as "Little England" is the perfect place to chillax after our heart-pumping, muscle-tearing adventures. It is also home to the famed Ceylon tea. So off we go!

We left Thilanka Resort early and traveled 6 hours to the picturesque landscape and temperate climate of the "city of plain" aka "city of light". Nuwara Eliya is located at an altitude of 1,868 meters. It's the best place for tea plantations. It is the best place in Sri Lanka! Think Baguio, only colder and cleaner!

The tuktuk and the men in sarongs.
Light at the end of the only tunnel we passed through on our way to Nuwara Eliya
Before lunch, we arrived in the misty hills of Nuwara Eliya. You know how I end up always being lost for words on the travels I go to? Yup, this is one of those moments. But then again, I have my duty to write for you so I will try my best to find my voice again. Ahem, ahem...

Nuwara Eliya was like a dream: it's quite easy to get lost in it. It has a mystical allure that made us wish we had more days to spend in Sri Lanka. Its mountains are covered with carpets of lush, velvety green tea shrubs. It was built entirely during the 19th century and its a little English country town in the middle of tropical Sri Lanka (how did this happen?! haha!).

Our guide/driver told us to take photos of the sceneries. Well, he didn't need to tell us! We wanted to fly above the tea hills! But since we can't fly, we just got out of the car, took off, and relished the cold weather and view. We inhaled the wonderful tea scent in the air. So, so refreshing! I didn't want to leave the place. It's the first time in months that I didn't choke on dust and sand. Haha!

Ahhhh Nuwara Eliya, I LOVE YOU!
Tourists taking photos of the tea pluckers... hey, they beat us to it!
The hills are alive...
... with the sound of waterfalls.
Nuwara Eliya is home to a dozen or so tea plantations that welcome visitors to a tour of their tea factory. Our driver took us to the Glenloch Tea Factory because it's one of the first factories on the road to Nuwara Eliya's town proper. The factory is over a hundred years old and their building looks really scary and old (we like creeping out ourselves). A lady in a Sri Lankan sari met us and took us around the factory; she showed us how they process the tea leaves and how the flavored ones come about (they mix dried fruits). The aroma of the tea being dried was quite strong and overwhelming.

The tea factory
The problem with having over a hundred visitors each day, the guides tend to be too tired already and just ramble on and on like a machine. So the tour around the factory doesn't seem personalized anymore. I can read the guide's thought bubble: "Let's just get this over with! Come buy our tea!!!" Haha! I couldn't even interrupt for a question so I just took photos thinking maybe I can Google it when I write about it.

It all starts with freshly-plucked tea...
Measuring the tea leaves
They sort out the tea leaves and leave them to dry.
Yes, we can touch them just for the sake of it. :)
Nearing its packaging state
Heady and strong scent
All packed!
After that, they gave us a cup of their freshly-brewed golden tips. Honestly, I am not a tea aficionado so I'm not sure if fresh and light are the perfect words to describe their tea but it tasted like that to me. However, I can't find any difference between the teas I've drank ever since. Maybe I'm too used to the commercial Lipton which they say uses the leftover tea leaves. I'm not sure if that's true so don't quote me on that.

The golden liquid
The tea souvenir center
There was a small shop where visitors can buy tea in boxes, packs, and bags. There's an adjoining restaurant where we had an impromptu lunch. Soooo hungry by this time. It has a good view of the tea fields on the other side of the road.

Sri Lanka spaghetti
So famished!
After our quick trip to Glenloch, we proceeded to the town's centre to pick up my friend and former officemate in the Philippines, Diane, who is in Sri Lanka volunteering for one year for a non-government organization for women empowerment (woot, so proud of her!). She was on a holiday in Nuwara Eliya and we  agreed to meet up. Before reaching the town proper, the drizzle became heavier  and turned into a full-pledge rain. The weather became cooler. Love it! (I miss the rain!!!)

We then went back to the road to look for our home for that night... the Misty View Cottage. This homestay was a bit hard to find and hard to reach because it is located high above a little hill and nestled in between villas for rent. It's 200 meters away from the highway. However, this proved to be one of the best accommodations I've ever had in all of my travels. Everything was personalised (we even have our own butler!). Mr. Dammika, our host, was welcoming and gracious. For the price we spent, it was well-worth it!

We  have a room to ourselves that has a beautiful view of the Kikiliyamana and Pidurutalagala mountain ranges. We can use the cozy living room and we had the best meal in the warm dining area. We even have floral necklaces as a welcome treat! Haha!

How calming is this scenery?
Waking up to this! PRICELESS!
After an hour of rest, we decided to check out another tea factory. We went to Mackwoods  but again, the drizzle won't stop! The factory was also closed for a reason I couldn't remember now (another reason why I should write our experiences immediately after getting back from the trip!). We just went around the souvenir shop and bought a few boxes of teas. Their packaging is much better than Glenloch's. But again, I have no extraordinary tastebud when it comes to tea. I cannot differentiate the taste of one brand from the other. Haha!

Just outside the Mackwoods tea factory is this splendid view...

Mother nature, you are great!
Since the rain wasn't stopping, we decided to head back to the cottage. The fog was also getting thicker and driving with them on the road makes it difficult for our driver. The weather is getting colder too and we're happier in the comforts of the inn's cozy interiors than outside even though all I wanted was to savor Nuwara Eliya's wonderful climate and fresh air. Hayyyy.

Don't you just want to stay in this cozy corner all day?
Cozy dining area
We were treated to a scrumptious dinner by our host.

The best tomato soup everrrr!
And on the following day, a tasty breakfast too:

What a simple yet lovely morning fare
Heavenly scrambled eggs delicately placed on top of bread
After a heavy breakfast, we were headed back to Colombo. It was an 8-hour road trip so we decided to go early and pass through sights and scenes on the roads, especially tea plantations. Our first stop though as was a little strawberry farm called Adma Agro. When they mentioned strawberry farm, I immediately thought of the strawberry farms in La Trinidad, Philippines. So I was kind of disappointed that their "farm" was just a few rows of plants at the back of a snack house. That's it?! Haha! However, on the brighter side, there is a waterfall at the back too!

Water fall in their backyard
A sweet pizza!
We had the intriguing strawberry pizza at the Adma Agro cafe and was pleasantly surprised. The pizza was a dessert! Pizza dough topped with cream, strawberry slices, and drizzles of chocolates. It was delicious! The little cafe on the road also offers ice cream and crepes. We continued on our way until we spotted a tea plantation with its workers up ahead the road side.

Tea pluckers ready to sell their pick for the day.
Most of the tea pluckers in Sri Lanka are women. And so a few of them approached me and were handing me tea leaves. I took it from one of them, took a photo, and that's when it got slightly traumatic... they started asking for money. Like everyone of them! In a Filipino's term, that would be "kuyog" where a group of people surrounds and hounds you for something. It can get physical especially if you did something wrong. However, I didn't do anything to them and my friend just told me to hand back the branch of tea to the lady and walk away from them. They kept on chanting "money, money, money!"

Some of them are friendly and ready with their warm smiles.
Good thing, their supervisor arrived and saw them harassing a tourist so he shooed them away and told them to get back to work. I have no idea that when I take a photo with them, they would ask me for money! Even when they got back to work, some of them were still putting out their palms at us asking for money. Whew! But most of them are friendly. Other tea pickers would ignore you when you take their photos but I guess it became profitable for some. This didn't stop me from loving Nuwara Eliya though.

On the way to Colombo
Anyway, other places you ought to visit in Nuwara Eliya is Hatton's Plains and Adam's Peak. We didnt have the chance to go because our time was limited and our energy was already drained by Dambulla and Sigiriya. Haha!

We took a few photos of the tea plantation and went back to the car and into Colombo. We stopped for one of the many spice gardens along the way. It wasn't that interesting because we have most of their spices in the Philippines. After almost 10 hours on the road (because we stopped by for food... of course we have to eat, hahaha!!!)... we reached Colombo and our hotel for the night... The Kingsbury.

COLOMBO!
Colombo is Sri Lanka's largest city. I thought it was the capital but apparently, the official capital of Sri Lanka is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte. Like most developing cities, Colombo is a mixture of the old and the new. It is busy and vibrant with modern and colonial buildings dotting its scenic land- and seascape.

Upon checking in The Kingsbury, it's the only time I realized I made good choices in our accommodations for our Sri Lanka trip. A resort, a home stay cottage, and finally, a hotel... they were diverse, offering different experiences at varied prices, but all in one trip! We loved our stay in The Kingsbury. All the amenities of a good hotel are there plus we loved their roof deck bar. And I love the Bulgari toiletries. So bango!

The hotel lobby
Infinity pool!
We also went around the area to look for last minute souvenirs. It's also great that even though we did not go to any of Sri Lanka's wonderful beaches, we saw the sea in our window and also from the hotel's hallway.

The view from our  hotel window
Maldives, are you somewhere there?! Haha! (Part of the Indian Ocean)

Sri Lanka's architecture and design
They have a "bay walk" too! :P
The following morning, we visited a church and stopped for a few photos with a tuktuk, Sri Lanka's famous tricycle, and a few landmarks in Colombo. We returned to the hotel, packed our bags, and met our driver to take us to the airport which is around an hour away from Colombo. On the roads to the Bandaranayke International Airport, we saw very interesting scenes.

An important building (okay, I forgot the name!)
Sri Lankans are mostly Buddhists but some of the districts have groups of Muslims, Christians, and Hindus. What I love about this diversity is that all these religious co-exist harmoniously in one country (why can't it be done in Saudi Arabia?! Okay, okay taboo topic!). For most of our road trips to Dambulla and Nuwara Eliya, we saw huge Buddha altars on the road sides. From Nuwara Eliya to Colombo, we encountered mosques. From Colombo to Negombo, we saw Christian altars and grottos outside the houses. Our driver is Roman Catholic, we are Roman Catholics but we visited mostly Buddhist temples. :)

So long, Sri Lanka!
Oh, Sri Lanka! We love Sri Lanka for its magnificent sceneries and sites. It's such a good thing that they opened to the whole world already because their country is worth seeing! We love it too because we see the Philippines in it. The tropical climate, the natural blessings it has, the friendly people... we're liken a sister country!

And so, I have to end our Sri Lanka adventure with this third and final entry. Even though it took me a lot of time (4 months!!!) to finish all three and I was quite very talkative in all the posts and I bombard you with lots of photos, I hope you enjoyed reading the travel entries and you become inspired to go and make your own adventure too. STOP MAKING EXCUSES. GO!!! :) ~ Sundrenched
