Sharing Passions at IgniteOruba

Imagine talking about something you really love in just 5 minutes? Sounds crazy right? But that is exactly what happened at IgniteOruba last April 26, 2014 at Al Oruba International School. More than 20 speakers and artists performed in front of an enthusiastic crowd to talk about their passions and endeavors and The Pink Tarha was proud to be a part of the speakers for that event!

If you’re familiar with the popular TedTalks, then you’ll have an idea of what Ignite events are like. However in Ignite events, speakers are tasked to dish out their stories in a series of twenty slides that automatically progresses every fifteen seconds. That's a total of five minutes for the entire speech. For the past two years, the school supported and organized TEDxOruba events. But this year the organizers wanted something new and fresh and decided to organize IgniteOruba, in hopes of sparking new passions and developing awareness of one’s talents and skills.

Sundrenched was in the Philippines when she asked me to give a talk about The Pink Tarha at IgniteOruba. I was excited, elated and terrified about the whole idea. How can I resist? So I prepared my slides and my speech the moment I got the confirmation from the event coordinator. I then realized how hard it was to sum up five amazing years into five minutes!

On the day of the event I was accompanied by my husband and our friend Jou. The event was held at the school auditorium with the men and women’s seats segregated. The school auditorium is just perfect for this kind of event. It’s a shame I wasn't able to take photos because our camera phones were collected at the reception. Oh well, you’ll just have to take my word for it! Kidding. Here are some photos from the event organizers.

Hosts Hussam Galal and Ahmed Salah
Seeing the stage and the red curtains gave me the jitters. But all that was forgotten when the show started. We watched a mix of young students and adults talk about their various interests and passions. And it wasn't limited to speeches, some presented their musical talents and another student rapped in Arabic. One of the speakers talked about overcoming stage fright and another urged her father to quit smoking.

While most of the speeches were in Arabic, we could tell by the way the students presented their talk that they truly prepared for this moment. Kudus to the school faculty and students who worked really hard on this endeavor!

Dr. Mohamed AL-Saadoun on Staying Positive
Moumen Afandy on Life Obstacles
Dr. Safaa Mahfouz talked about Self-Improvement
Abdullah Aqily talked about his journey as a Fat Fighter
Sampaguita Pride talked about The Pink Tarha
My takeaway from this experience? I think the jolt of excitement of being on stage boosted my morale and has inspired me to pursue and tick off a few items from my bucket list. I realized that the things we do can turn into something great if we pour love, dedication and patience into everything that we do. IgniteOruba has indeed ignited a new passion in me, a new lease on life as a writer and artist.

To the organizers of IgniteOruba thank you so much for giving us the opportunity to share our passion with everyone that night. More power!

Cheers!

Top 5 Suggestions for the Janadriyah Festival (aka Janadriyah 2014)

It's the Janadriyah season once again! I have written that sentence five times now (or more if you count my announcements in Facebook). Can you believe it? I've been attending the Janadriyah festival for YEARS now and don't I get tired?! Haha! I won't beat around the bush to tell you how AWESOME it is. Actually compared to other festivals, especially the fiestas in the Philippines, the Janadriyah is pretty boring. However, since it's the only major festival in the Riyadh province, it's already a feat on its own. There are a lot of reasons why you should go especially if it's your first time. Yes to new experiences please! I won't tell you why you should go in this entry because we've pretty much spoilt that for you in this, this, this, and this entries.

And here we go again! :)
What I'm going to tell you though are the suggestions that might make Janadriyah more interesting. I know the organizers won't probably read this and will probably laugh at my recommendations since what do I know about organising?! Except for my slight OCD when it comes to travel itineraries, I'm not much of an organised person myself so with?! And in the hierarchy of things in the Kingdom, I am nowhere near the... hierarchy itself. Haha! But I'm just airing my POVs out there. Universe, you are listening right?

1. An English version of the Janadriyah website with a clear program and schedule please. I am one of those people who went to the official website and was a bit frustrated. Can someone lead me to the English version please? The website can be translated by your browsers sure but isn't it easier if there's a link somewhere that says "English"? A click will lead us to a website that has all the details we should know like schedules and programs. You know how many times I've been asked what time does it start and end? Countless! And I love you, dear Pink Tarha readers, but it gets tiring answering the same question over and over. Hehe.

Also a schedule of the program would be nice. Like when you go to Disneyland, they publish in their maps the time a performance would start so you can go to the venue ahead of time. I'm not saying Janadriyah is Disneyland (*cough*) but if I want to watch the ardha (sword dance), I want to see it from start to finish and not just chance upon it in one of the pavilions. Also, I want to catch the parade and not just hear it from the other side of the street. Chances are, when you go Janadriyah once, you will not visit again on the following days (because it's faaaar from the city centre) so cramming all the interesting sights and sites in one visit is a must.

The sights and sites of Janadriyah... sigh... :)
2. More activities in the pavilions. I've been to the Janadriyah five times so I'm pretty much a veteran already. (Or maybe not much considering that this year is the 29th edition.) As much as I love discovering the activities and items on exhibit in each pavilion, they were pretty much the same ever since. Maybe stirring up things a little bit would be nice. Like for the Taif area, maybe free bouquets of roses? Haha! I know there might be rules and regulations and all those things that hinder growth and development but I'm sure every one would appreciate fresh ideas and more fun activities every now and then. It's like going all out since it's the only huuuge festival in Riyadh (and Saudi Arabia).

But here are the activities you shouldn't miss:
a. Shoot me baby one more time! Or more like 'just for one time!' LOL. You can fire an air gun at the Ministry of Interior's pavilion but only once. Or more if it's not yet the prayer time and there's no long line behind you.

Someone enjoyed her time in the shooting range! Haha!
b. Befriend dinosaurs and kick soccer balls to smash the television screen at the King Abdulaziz City of Science and Technology.

We found new friends! Haha!
c. Get a rose from the Riyadh pavilion (when you're expecting the rose from the Taif area) and be surprised that the Riyadh Municipality has a small pavilion considering it's the capital.

Woot, finally had a rose! And it's pink!
d. Take dramatic photos of the festival from the bridge of the Ports Authority pavilion (one of the most unique pavilions in Janadriyah) and of course, ask yourself why you're standing in a bridge in the Janadriyah festival!

Love this view!
e. Discover street food, Saudi Arabia style at the Makkah pavilion. The smoke coming from this pavilion enticed us to enter and we didn't regret it one bit because we found a delicious spicy meat snack that looks fried but tastes grilled (awesome yeah?), doughy balls that need to be dipped in a sweet sauce, and Vimto in large vats!

Freshly-cooked food!
3. More organised entrances, parking, and signages. In the Janadriyah, it's like we're all given a huge piece of empty lot and you can park anywhere and taxi can wait any time. There are little signs at the entrance and parking area that our driver who just dropped us off a few minutes ago got lost on his way back to us (my friend left her phone on his car so he needed to go back). He needed to thread his way in and out cars and people until he just gave up, parked somewhere, and found us on foot. Haha! I suggest you get a map at the information booths first so you know where the restrooms, first aid area, food court, etc. are. This will also prevent you from wandering around aimlessly. Wait, I guess you have to find an information booth first! Haha!

Here's a map:

Map of the Janadriyah Village
Please disregard the fact that they spelled a lot of words incorrectly. Ironically, they spelt "Education" with a word that doesn't even exist.

4. More food choices please. I don't think I have to explain this further. Haha!

The Janadriyah 2014
5. The Philippines as the guest country. I don't know what their criteria is in choosing the guest country but I think it's about time they consider the Philippines. Am I right or am I right?! Haha! No seriously, it's a great way for the Saudis to get to know our culture and it's a great way for Filipinos to be at the heart of Saudi's culture too. Also, our cultural presentations are great. You should see tinikling and pandanggo sa ilaw. And since women will probably be not allowed to perform on stage, it would be entertaining to see guys dance these cultural dances. Haha! Like Saudi Arabia, the Philippines gives value to folklore and crafts. The Philippines is a third world country, yes, but our traditions, culture, nature, and people are first rate! ;)

Who ever gets tired of camels?!
All in all, I've seen the development and improvements in the Janadriyah this year. And they're all for the better! Yey! For one, it is tidier! There are trash bins 10 steps away from each other. And if you can't see a yellow garbage can, then there's a cleaner holding a broom and rolling another trash bin. There are more religious police but not the shouting, "I will embarrass you for the sake of embarrassing you" kind. They man the gates so please, just don't be pasaway. When they say it's for ladies and families only, follow it. The food area is more organised and they have sponsors giving out free stuff (hello Maggi, Puck, and Lipton!). The pavilions of the ministries are getting better and better. The people are friendly and welcoming. So...

I looove the crowd because it's so different from anywhere else in the world!
Visit the Janadriyah festival!!! It's open for families and ladies until February 28 from 4:00pm to midnight. Map to the Jandriyah here. It's opposite Selwa compound, just before the King Abdulla Farms. ~ Sundrenched

First Ever Saudi Design Week! #iamdesign

Three years ago, it would have been impossible to talk about a huge event in Riyadh. We’ve been feeling envious of Jeddah which has been holding indie events here and there. We really thought we’d have to migrate over there just to attend a fashion or design show (because have you seen The Loft? It's so nice!). Then the capital decided to ease up on the events and we would get invited to a few from time to time. I just think that Saudi Arabia is bursting with creativity... it just needs the avenue and venue for it to come out!

Finally, here’s one event that might just launch a thousand other fashion and design events…

The Saudi Design Week is launching its first edition this month. From February 9-15, 2014, Riyadh will be a host to this boutique fair created and organized by Oasis Magazine in partnership with the King Faisal Center for Research and Islamic Studies. A series of open events that go beyond a single main venue will enliven different areas of the city center. SDW will bring together stars of design, creatives, and the public for a lively discussion of relevant design topics and exhibition of the region’s best. Multiple disciplines from decorative art, design, art, photography, typography, and fashion will be covered.

Noura Bouzo, co-founder and organizer of the SDW, said “It is not about being the most extravagant regional gathering of design but SDW is about starting a solid conversation that will initiate advancement within the creative community.” SDW hopes to start a great dialog and cooperation among the creative communities and help Saudi’s art and design landscape grow through action and discussion.

A highlight of this year’s SDW is the Design Forum. Gracing the forum are keynote speakers including HRH Princess Reema bint Bandar Al Saud, Cyril Zammit, Carla Saliba, Faisal Malki, Dr. Maha Senan, and many more.

With the slogan, “I AM DESIGN,” SDW promises to put a spotlight on the persons behind the products. “It is about time that Riyadh celebrates Saudi Arabia’s thriving creative energy and learn from the region’s creative scenes. SDW is a sample of what the city has to offer. Riyadh will showcase the best of the design community from grassroots movements, to government institutions, and international presence. This is the first step towards creating a solid design hub,” said Basma Bouzo, also the co-founder and organizer of SDW.

Indeed, this huge event will not only help catapult Riyadh to become one of the most thriving design destinations of the region. It will also show how Riyadh is opening up to the world in terms of sharing their creativity to the international scene and in return, the world celebrating Riyadh’s creativity and beauty.

For more information on the Saudi Design Week, you can check www.saudidesignweek.com. You can get your tickets HERE for $14 per day. (Hurry! The Opening Day tickets are sold out!) And don’t forget the hashtags #iamdesign and #saudidesignweek when you’re updating your social media sites! :)

See you at the SDW14! ~ Sundrenched

The Top 5 Pink Tarha Experiences Of 2013

The year 2013 is coming to an end and here comes another dilemma: what to write for the all-important year-end entry? My brain is not properly functioning right now because of the booze and lechon (cholesterol mehhhn) I consumed during the holiday so I had to resort to Google for year-ender ideas. Of course there's always the new year resolutions but we Pink Tarhas are really not known for keeping up with ours so how can we advice you to do so? Then there's the best entries of the year but we've done that. Year-ender/opened messages? We've done that too! We even wrote individual entries. While we did that for the end of 2012 and the beginning of 2013, the messages are still applicable now so you may want to read them again here: Sampaguita Pride, Shoegarfreeruby, Eyecandy, and Sundrenched.

Anyway, I decided to pick the top 5 Pink Tarha experiences we've had for 2013. I was reading a magazine a while ago and I stumbled upon this phrase, "People who spend money on experience instead of new things are happier over all." I couldn't help but agree. The Pink Tarha ladies have a lot of experiences in 2013 that we will never exchange for any gadget or any amount of clothes and shoes (well, we might have to ask Shoegarfreeruby again about this, hehe). Here are the best of what we had in 2013:

Hands down the best travel experience we've had this year is going to the Maldives. It's a dream travel come true. First, because it's the first time our group of friends went on a trip together all at the same time to the same place. Second, because it's Maldives!!! C'mon, if you have one country in your bucket list, it would have to be this paradise. There were countless friends who approached and asked us about our trip to Maldives and they can't help but be inspired to save up and go there too. The fact that the islands of Maldives is said to be sinking might also double your efforts to go… hurry!

We miss you, Maldives!
Other must travel destinations: SRI LANKA and THAILAND

When we staged the Pink Tarha Mornings in Jeddah, one thing became very apparent: Men Loves The Pink Tarha. Okay, let me explain that (for the fear of a tough conservative might be reading this and misinterpret it). Unlike the TPTM Riyadh, the one in Jeddah was co-ed because Jeddah is more relaxed on their gender mixing rules (we're not abusing it though) and most of our participants were men (thanks to the PEBA officers who have been supportive since the beginning) and we love how active and eager they were. It actually inspired me to write an entry on why men should read The Pink Tarha. Another experience we value during our Jeddah tour is the chance to go to the Tent City and meet wonderful people who, despite of their hard circumstances, were still hopeful. We feel grateful for the opportunity to reach out and help in our own little ways.

A memorable Pink Tarha Morning!
Realization and Lesson: A City in Gridlock

When we started this blog, we hardly get invites from events. It wasn't only because the blog was just a newbie; it was because events are rare, almost non-existent. But 2013 saw the boom of these events in the city, be it in fashion, beauty, bazaars, newly-opened restaurants, and coffee mornings. And we love attending these events because we get to meet interesting people and get to know their products and services. In a way, we saw how the event landscape in Riyadh has opened up to more people and has changed throughout the months. In turn, these are shaping Riyadh to be a cosmopolitan city with its traditions and values intact. To be a part of this burgeoning trend is priceless.

More Riyadh events please!

The restaurant scene in Riyadh leaves more to be desired. There are many world cuisines that are not yet represented but we're willing to wait. After all, some of the most interesting restaurants are already here; they're just waiting to be discovered. Take for example the hamburger that is being lined up for hours, the bubble tea that I drank day after day after day (it's already embarrassing), the most-talked about bread store, the restaurant that serves mostly chicken dishes, the Japanese restaurant that takes the cuisine up a notch, the steak house that renovated itself, the psychedelic Chinese restaurant that owns a building, etc etc! Readers often ask if we eat in these restos for free. Why, wouldn't it be AWESOME?! But no, we pay for our food just like you do most of the time and that's quite awesome too because we enjoy the food and the companionship of the friends we're with without thinking of the consequences. Of course, we do get invited by restaurants once in a blue moon and that's a pretty awesome blogger perk too.

Yummy Riyadh!

5. MEETING YOU
The experience of meeting readers all over Riyadh is priceless! Sometimes, we don't even meet you personally. Most of you just comment and message and we're still very much grateful. Sometimes, friends of friends bring up The Pink Tarha in conversations and meet ups. It's funny and awesome how we're all connected in more ways than one. I remember when I got back from Maldives and it was the first time my brother saw me, his first words weren't "How was your Maldives trip?" His first question was "Can I have one of your Pink Tarha mugs?" I asked him why and he said that his friend's wife reads the blog and he plans on giving the mug as a birthday gift. Haha! Or how the doctor of Shoegarfreruby's aunt actually asked her, "Do you know The Pink Tarha? They're Filipinos and they blog." Or how we just recently received an appreciation email from a reader just before the new year ushers in! Here's an excerpt of her email to us:
Hi there girls! I just want to let you know that I am an avid reader of your blog. Since I first set foot on Saudi, I searched for an informative blog and found The Pink Tarha. I just want to commend everyone of you because you have helped a lot of people especially fellow Filipinos who are trying to adopt to the Saudi lifestyle. I first came across your blog in 2011 and have been following everything until now. I also recommend your blog to visitors and first-timers, and to almost everyone that I know of. I know how appreciation works a long way. And in this simple way, I hope I have extended it to all of you. Well, gusto ko lang malaman nyo na marami kayong natutulungan at napapasaya. Keep up the good work! God bless you all.
Lovelots, Joyce Ann

Thank you, Joyce Ann! This is a nice gift for the new year. What a morale booster! What an inspiring message. :)

THANK YOU, THANK YOU DEAR READERS FOR EVERY THING! You don't know how much you make us go 'awwww' every time you send us your comments and feedback. We will continue writing to the best of our abilities. We will continue to help, guide, and inspire! YOU ARE ALL AWESOME!!! WE LOVE YOU!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! Cheers to a more fabulous 2014, Riyadhizens!!! - Sundrenched

Fabulous #NLAW13

The Riyadh event landscape is changing. I'm not sure I'm supposed to reveal that out loud just in case someone who's not supposed to know discovers it. Haha! But there is nothing wrong in the events that are held by various brands in the city. They're fun, lively, and very stylish. It proves that Riyadh is actually the "it" city right now. Whoops, did I just claim that?! Haha!

One of the recent events we attended was held by one of our favorite fashion brands... New Look! This brand is our go-to fashion brand when we're looking for stylish yet affordable pieces. We do not leave a mall without going to New Look. Except of course when there's no New Look store in it. Otherwise, we just go to the stand-alone New Look branch in Olaya Road.

New Look began in Taunton, United Kingdom in 1969 and has grown to over 1,100 stores worldwide. They're pretty popular in the UK and Europe. New Look has 30 stores in the Kingdom and they're opening their 31st branch in the Eastern Province soon. New Look offers clothes, accessories, bags and shoes that are trendy and easy-to-wear. Most of the items in The Pink Tarha ladies' closets are from New Look. What can we say? We love it!

A flawless, classic welcome for NLAW13
The New Look Autumn Winter 2013 Collection
The event last week was New Look's launching of their autumn 2013 collection. It was held in Maison Bo-M, also one of our favorite places in Riyadh, located in Nujoud Mall beside the Intercontinental Hotel. We were warmly welcomed by the New Look marketing team which flew in from Dubai, UAE. We were toured by the lovely Robyn to see the various collections and the bestselling pieces they have.

Here's a look at one of the best events we've been to this year:

The Baboushka Collection
Be on the lookout for the Russian-inspired collection. The accessories featuring matryoshka dolls are so cute! Love the black pullover too.

Blues, whites, and blacks...
Who can get wrong in this combination? I love this collection the most because it doesn't only have my favorite colors, it's also my style.

A mix of casuals
The reds.
The primary colors red and blue are highlighted in the collections. I love the stripes and patterns too. You know the usual rule right? Patterns against solids makes a good combo.

Preppy chic
The collection above is for the sweet and adventurous. The florals and pastels lend a cuteness that's hard to resist and the denims gives off a fierceness that balances the whole look.

The formals and the semi-formals
I have a love for New Look's formal wear. They're affordable but glamorous and anyone can pull of the "prom" or "red carpet" look effortlessly with their long gowns and mini dresses. I was telling Robyn that I have one of their dress style in 3 colors because I really look good on that kind of dress (at least I think I do! Haha!). Remember my violet gown here? It's from New Look and I bought it when it was on sale (only SR160!). A lot of my friends said that I look 'expensive' on it. ;)

LOVE New Looks accessories and shoes
No one can argue that New Look boasts of the some of the best accessories, bags, and shoes in Riyadh. Half of our accessories and shoes came from this brand. And they have every kind for all occasions. Pair the ones above with the formal wear and you're on your way to the next glam event.

More bags and shoes

On to my wish list!
I appreciate the way they displayed the items on Maison Bo-M's shelf and cabinets. I wanted to point out all the shoes and bags that caught my attention and buy them all (okay, more of ask for them if possible, haha!).

Dashing!
The guys side
Oh look, the guys have their corner too. New Look are offering other brands in their label lounge. For guys, they have Tokyo Laundry.

After going around and checking out the items that we liked, we sat down in Maison Bo-M's cafe to enjoy the food. I must say that I am truly impressed with the appetizers and desserts that were served. They're all so good! Kudos to the chef!

Yummy!
Love the chicken satay and the peanut sauce!
Congratulations to the team of New Look! You all did a good job launching the new Autumn/Winter 2013 collection.

Next event please!
So what are you waiting for, ladies and gents? See you in New Look? ;) ~ Sundrenched

The #CreativeJapanFashionFair

The Pink Tarha has been invited to attend the Creative Japan Fashion Fair last night. Happening at the Harvey Nichols in Faisaliah Mall, this event is organized by the Japan Fashion Week Organization in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). The fair was launched last night but will run until March 15, 2013 at the Plaza Floor (Special Space) of Harvey Nichols. We're happy to see this kind of events unfold in Riyadh so we were there in a heartbeat.

The third floor is the place to be.
The charm of Japan culture has always been a trend in the fashion industry. Its quirkiness and cuteness are its main draws. The Creative Japan Fashion Fair aims to introduce the appealing points of Japanese fashion and culture to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. As their cute kit said, "Through the CREATIVE JAPAN Fashion Fair, we hope you will incorporate various charms of "Japan" brands in your life."

Artist Teppei Maki created key visuals with motifs from manga artist Osamu Tezuka's characters.
The following brands are participating in the fair:
A Degree Fahrenheit - garments that has design aesthetics that will enhance the value of individuals.
FugaHum - clothing line that uses the various ways of fashion design and art making.
Gasbook Tee - an original t-shirt brand by Gas As Interface as a means for artists to expand their creativity.
Motonari Ono - clothes that has a classic romantic and luxurious feel
Pleats Please by Issey Miyake - a line that embodies the most fundamental concepts of designer Issey Miyake
Somarta - body wear series that has a "possibility on the body" concept
Tsumori Chisato - innovative and luxurious textiles, intricate beading, embroidery, appliques, and prints
Asumi Bijoux - colors and beauty of plants in jewelry; created by Asumi Shiromoto
Bao Bao by Issey Miyake - line of bags and pouches that folds, accommodates and transforms itself after handling to create dramatic new shapes
Chiso - collection of stoles that introduces a delicate sense of beauty today
Coquette - handbags in high quality leather made in Japan by Japanese traditional artisan techniques for modern women

Wasara - disposable tableware that are earth-conscious and fully biodegradable and compostable
Tokyu Hands - the hint market: ideal superstore
(brand descriptions are condensed from the media kit)

We went around the display and exhibit area to take photos of stuff that really caught our attention... and boy there were many! Here's a glimpse of what you'll see in the Creative Japan Fashion Fair...

High-end fashion
Chisato's creations
Issey Miyake's captivating Pleats Please
The Bao Bao of Issey Miyake
Floral patterns from Hana Hyaku Yo
Kimono-inspired clutches and wallets
Origami-inspired
Delicious jewelries!
Macaroons, not edible.
I'm in love with this set. So decadent!
So soft Standard Crafts (not for sale)
Homaygawd, cuteness overload! (sadly not for sale)
Lucky charms
Aren't these the quirkiest chair for your gadgets?
I want to take home this whole luggage!
I have to admit that I didn't take a lot of photos of their clothes because these are items you need to see and feel for yourself. Also, when I saw their mini stationery area on the third floor, I was rooted in place. I can't help it. I love Japanese stationeries. They think of the cutest stuff and they invent the little things that you think you don't need but actually, you do.

I LOVE WASHI TAPES!!!! (SR30 each)
Crafters would love these decorative tapes.
Looks good enough to eat? Don't! They're candles. Haha.
So much goodness!
WOuld I dare use these for erasing? I'd rather put them as decors. LOL.
KAWAII!
I'm getting hungry just by looking at these... clips?!
For doodling, scribbling, writing
Winner! Eyecandy and I LOVE this!
See? They do think of every thing!
Seriously, you need more clips in your life!
Jewels that you can put in your iphone via its earphones jack
I told you, the stationery section left me pining for every thing in their rack. I hope I can come back for the washi tapes (please don't hoard them, haha!).

The event was lovely and well-organized. We can't help but wish they would create more events like this in Riyadh. ;) Thank you, Harvey Nichols!

The Creative Japan Fashion Fair is until March 15. Go and visit now! (and please remember, do not hoard their stationery products, okay? Leave some for us!) The mere art wall is enough reason to drop by. ~ Sundrenched
